Ernakulam reported the highest number of influenza infections in Kerala in June. As many as 324 cases were reported, with some days recording more than 50 cases. With the arrival of the monsoon season, a sudden surge in influenza cases has been observed in the district, according to medical experts, who have also cautioned the public to practise good hygiene.

A senior Health department official said advisories had been issued highlighting the need to remain vigilant about the disease and outlining measures to prevent its spread.

“We have shared all the precautionary measures that the public needs to follow to prevent such infections. All medical officers have been sensitised to remain vigilant about diseases such as H1N1. It is an endemic disease, but cases are rising sporadically. We have also ensured the availability of medicines. The public needs to take basic precautions such as wearing masks, using sanitisers, and maintaining good hand hygiene,” said the official.

Dr. Reshmi Ramachandran, Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Government Medical College, Ernakulam, said an increase in influenza cases was expected with the onset of the monsoon.

“Influenza cases tend to spike during seasonal changes. Immunocompromised individuals are advised to receive a flu shot to reduce the risk of complications if they contract the disease,” said Dr. Ramachandran.

Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Convener of the Research Cell of the Indian Medical Association, Kerala, stressed the need for flu shots. “With the onset of the monsoon, influenza cases have begun to rise. Influenza is a fast-spreading viral respiratory infection that can also cause inflammation of the blood vessels. Individuals with comorbidities are particularly vulnerable to complications. A flu shot can significantly reduce the risk of complications following infection. Flu vaccines can be administered to anyone above the age of six months,” said Dr. Jayadevan.
