European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday turned heads with her elegant turmeric-coloured Bandhgala coat and scarf, created using the ancient Indian tie-and-dye art of Bandhini.
The coat is made from Mashru, a silk-and-cotton fabric specially woven in Gujarat, and features a contrast-coloured kantha hand stitch. The accompanying silk scarf, with subtle pink piping, adds a refined accent.

The EU chief’s wardrobe during her India trip has already captured public attention. As the chief guest at the 77th Republic Day celebrations on Monday, she wore a maroon and gold silk brocade Bandhgala.
Earlier today, as India and the EU sealed a landmark free trade agreement through talks, von der Leyen wore a blue outfit paired with white trousers while delivering a joint press statement at Hyderabad House.
During her engagements, von der Leyen also visited the Mahatma Gandhi memorial at Rajghat alongside Costa. She praised India for its “exceptional hospitality" and described her Republic Day experience as “a memory I will carry for a lifetime" due to the powerful sense of community she witnessed.
The FDCI lauded von der Leyen’s sartorial choices as a “proud moment for Indian fashion" on Instagram. Chairman Sunil Sethi said the EU chief’s ensembles not only reflected style but also paid homage to the craftsmanship of Indian weavers and designers.
“Her appropriate choice was not just a statement of style, but a homage to the extraordinary talent of Indian craftsmen and weavers whose artistry tells the story of our heritage on the world stage," Sethi added.
