Ex-AAP candidate found dead in Rajkot, family alleges live-in partner killed her

A 23-year-old woman who had earlier contested civic elections in Gujarat's Jetpur town as an AAP candidate was found hanging in her rented flat in Rajkot on June 22, police said. While investigators are treating the case as suicide at present, her family has alleged that she was murdered by her live-in partner.

The woman, identified as Nandani Bosamiya, had been living with Aslam Hussain Sama, who is already married, in a live-in relationship for nearly a year, police said. Officers said their preliminary investigation suggests she was distressed over Sama frequently visiting his wife in Junagadh, while her family has claimed the couple had been quarrelling in the days before her death.

Bosamiya, a native of Jetpur in Rajkot district, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her flat near Gondal crossroads in the evening of June 22. Rajkot city police registered a case of accidental death and began an investigation.

Assistant Commissioner of Police BJ Chaudhary told reporters, "For the past year, she had been in a live-in relationship with Aslam Sama. Since he was already married, he would often go to meet his wife, which upset Bosamiya. She was deeply hurt by this and appears to have taken the extreme step."

Chaudhary said Bosamiya had sent a WhatsApp message to her younger sister before her death, indicating that she was ending her life. In the message, she reportedly said she was taking the extreme step on her own and that nobody was responsible for her death.

"At present, the case is being treated as a suicide. Her mobile phone has been seized and sent to the forensic examination. We are recording statements of family members and analysing call detail records as part of the investigation," the ACP said, adding that Sama may be summoned for questioning if required.

Her family, however, rejected the suicide theory. Her sister, Rupal Bosamiya, alleged there had been frequent quarrels between the couple in the days leading up to the incident. "My sister was murdered. There were marks on her hands and nail scratches on her neck. They had been having serious arguments for the last two or three days," she said.

Rupal also alleged that Sama had gone missing after the incident and that his phone was switched off. 'Ever since the incident, he has been absconding and his phone is switched off. We strongly suspect that he is responsible for her death,' she said, while demanding strict action and justice for her sister.

Bosamiya had contested the 2025 Jetpur-Navagadh municipality elections as an Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Ward No. 1, but lost. Party sources said she did not hold any organisational post. The case also drew political attention after BJP leader Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga raised the issue on social media.

In a post on X, he referred to the allegations made by Bosamiya's family that she was subjected to mental and physical harassment by Sama and his relatives. "She was in a relationship with a married man, Aslam. Her family tried their best to save her. They warned her, pleaded with her and stood by her. But she fought with them, left home, and chose to live with Aslam despite knowing he was already married," Bagga said.

Police said all the allegations made by family members are being examined and that further investigation is under way. For now, the case is being treated as suicide, even as investigators continue to look into the family's claim that Bosamiya was murdered.
