Former Agniveers will be entitled to a 20 per cent reservation in direct recruitment to a range of Group ‘C’ posts in Delhi, following a policy reviewed by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu. Departments have been instructed to amend recruitment rules and complete all related formalities by June 30 to put the quota into effect.
The matter was reviewed at a meeting attended by the Chief Secretary, the Delhi Police Commissioner and other senior officials. According to the administration, the measure is part of the Centre’s larger effort to create employment avenues for Ex-Agniveers after the completion of their military service.
The reservation will cover direct recruitment to several frontline positions, including police constables, firemen, jail warders, forest guards and wildlife guards.
Eligible Ex-Agniveers applying for vacancies in various Delhi government departments and agencies will be able to avail of the benefit.
Departments have also been empowered to assign former Agniveers to posts that make use of the skills, discipline and training acquired during their tenure in the armed forces.
All departments concerned have been directed by the Lieutenant Governor to finish procedural changes and revise recruitment rules by June 30 to ensure implementation of the policy.
“To ensure equal opportunity and recognise their service to the nation, recruitment under this provision will be open to all eligible Ex-Agniveers," Sandhu said in a post on X.
He added that the initiative is aimed at making use of the training and experience of former Agniveers in public service roles.
With the latest decision, the scope of reservation for Ex-Agniveers has been widened beyond a single department and extended to multiple agencies of the Delhi government.
Earlier this year, Delhi Police had revised its recruitment rules to earmark 20 per cent of constable vacancies for Ex-Agniveers. The changes also included age relaxation and certain exemptions related to the recruitment process for eligible candidates.
By bringing more departments under its ambit, the new policy expands the reservation benefit to a broader set of Group ‘C’ posts in the national capital.
The administration said the decision is in keeping with the Government of India’s broader objective of providing employment opportunities to Ex-Agniveers after their military service.
Reservation and relaxation measures for Ex-Agniveers have already been announced by the Union government for recruitment to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles. Similar provisions have also been introduced by several states in police and other government services.
Introduced in 2022, the Agnipath scheme provides for the recruitment of young men and women into the armed forces for a period of four years. While a section is absorbed into regular service, others move to civilian careers after the completion of their tenure.
