A 19-year-old woman was brutally attacked with a knife five times in a Ujjain market by a man identified as her former partner.
UJJAIN: A 19-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed five times by a man claiming to be her former partner at a busy medicine market in Ujjain on Friday afternoon. The accused was arrested about four hours later after fracturing his leg while attempting to flee from police. The victim, Pooja alias Gungun, a resident of Bapunagar, had just arrived for work at Dayal Pharma on Madhav Nagar Railway Station Road when the accused, Sunil Jaroliya of Dendia village, allegedly intercepted her. Police said the woman refused to speak to Sunil and reached for her phone to call her relatives, following which he allegedly attacked her with a knife, inflicting injuries to her neck, abdomen and hands before fleeing the spot. Passers-by rushed the injured woman to a private hospital, where she remained in critical condition till late Friday evening. Station House Officer (SHO) Tarun Kureel formed a special team to track down the accused. Police traced his escape route and cornered him near an engineering college about four hours after the attack. Officials said Sunil tried to evade arrest by climbing a wall but lost his balance, fell and fractured his leg, after which he was taken into custody. CCTV footage of the stabbing has also surfaced and is being examined as part of the investigation. Police have registered a case against the accused under Sections 109(1), 118(1) and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
