USA forward Folarin Balogun experienced the full spectrum of emotions during the co-hosts’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old fired the United States into the lead on the stroke of half-time, calmly finishing after a fortunate ricochet inside the penalty area fell kindly into his path. It was Balogun’s fifth goal in his last six competitive appearances for the USMNT, continuing his impressive run in front of goal.
However, what had begun as a dream evening took a dramatic turn just after the hour mark.
Why Was Folarin Balogun Sent Off?
The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when Balogun challenged Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemović for a loose ball in midfield.
As the pair contested possession, Balogun landed with his studs on the back of Muharemović’s right ankle. Referee Raphael Claus initially allowed play to continue, but Bosnia’s players immediately appealed for a dismissal.
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) advised Claus to review the incident on the pitch-side monitor. After watching multiple replays, the Brazilian official upgraded his original decision and showed Balogun a straight red card for serious foul play, ruling that the challenge endangered the safety of his opponent.
The dismissal meant Balogun went from goalscorer to the first USA player sent off in the tournament, leaving Mauricio Pochettino’s side to play the final 25 minutes with 10 men.
A Rare World Cup Feat
Despite the setback, the United States held firm defensively before Malik Tillman curled home a superb free-kick in the 82nd minute to seal a famous 2-0 victory and book a place in the Round of 16.
Balogun also entered an unusual piece of World Cup history. He became only the fourth player to score and receive a red card in a World Cup knockout match, joining Zinedine Zidane (2006 final), Ronaldinho (2002 quarter-final) and Garrincha (1962 semi-final).
The victory was equally significant for the United States, ending a long wait for success against European opposition. Before kick-off, the Americans had won just one of their previous 21 World Cup meetings with UEFA nations (D7 L13) and were winless in their last 13 such matches since defeating Portugal 3-2 at the 2002 World Cup.
