Hours after leaders of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD) and BNP were summoned by the Bangladesh Army and questioned in the early hours of Monday, Sarjis Alam, a key face of the protest that erupted in the country last year, questioned the actions by the Army.

Alam’s remarks came as Brig Gen Humayun Kaiyum interrogated Imran Ahmed and Imtiaz Ahmed Imti, conveners of the district and city units of SAD, and some local BNP leaders at around 12:30 a.m. over the attack and vandalism at the residence of Jatiyo Party Chairman GM Quader in Rangpur on Thursday.

“For now, our position is clear – those who disrupt public life, engage in vandalism, set fires in the name of a mob, or destroy homes must get the message: they will not be allowed such opportunities anymore," General Humayun Kaiyum said, as per an NDTV report.

Alam, who is a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a close aide of Muhammad Yunus, the chief adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh, has asked the country’s Army about the operations carried out to arrest the goons and killers of the Bangladesh Awami League since the political turmoil erupted in the country last year.

“If it’s for the sake of investigation, anyone – from Students Against Discrimination, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamaat, or National Citizen Party – can be questioned. But we believe doing it at 1:00 a.m. or 2:00 a.m. sends the wrong message," Sarjis Alam was quoted as saying by NDTV.

The Rangpur residence of Jatiyo Party (JaPa) Chairman GM Quader was vandalised on Thursday night at nearly 8:30 p.m. Reportedly, the attack took place when the JaPa chief was inside his residence.

Meanwhile, amid the ongoing tensions in the country, a special tribunal set up to try Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina began proceedings Sunday by accepting charges of crimes against humanity filed against her in connection with a mass uprising in which hundreds of students were killed last year.
