Meta has said that it is officially begun testing a standalone version of Vibes, its AI-native video platform. With this app, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook tech giant is positioning Vibes as a direct competitor to OpenAI’s Sora, by reportedly moving the feature out of the general “Meta AI” app.
The app is said to host only synthetically generated content.Citing the company’s confirmation on the testing of the app, TechCrunch reported that unlike Instagram Reels or TikTok, wherein users share human-captured footage, the Vibes feed is composed entirely of AI-generated clips. It also said that users can generate a video from a text prompt or take an existing video from their feed and “remix” it. “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta said in an emailed statement to the publication.“We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering people a more focused and immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community,” the company added. What is Vibes appOriginally launched last September as an integrated feed, Vibes allows users to create, discover, and “remix” short-form AI videos.
The standalone pilot of the app is currently live in markets including Brazil and Mexico. The company aims to provide a more “focused and immersive environment” for a format Meta says is seeing explosive growth. However, the company has not released specific user numbers to support its statement but the report cites internal data, saying that AI media generation within Meta’s apps tripled year-over-year in late 2025.
Further, despite being a standalone app, Vibes is said to remain deeply integrated to Meta’s social ecosystem, allowing users can cross-post their AI creations directly to Instagram Reels or Facebook Stories.Meta also confirmed it is exploring premium subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. Under the proposed model, users would receive a base number of video generations per month for free, with the option to subscribe to unlock higher capacity and more advanced editing tools.
