Ram temple donation theft residents reaction
Ayodhya: Even as the alleged irregularities in the management of donation at Ram Temple continue to hog headlines, Ayodhya’s streets tell a different story. Life around the temple complex remains largely unchanged, with devotees queuing up for ‘darshan’, temple bells echoing through the streets, and markets bustling with pilgrims.Conversations with residents, priests, shopkeepers and visitors reveal a common sentiment — while any financial wrongdoing must be investigated, they do not want the controversy to overshadow the sanctity of the Ram Temple or Ayodhya’s identity as one of the holiest cities for Hindus.Walking through Ram Path amid rows of shops selling prayer items, ‘prasad’, sweets and souvenirs, there is hardly any sign of the political storm that has been raging in national debates.People said their faith in Lord Ram remained unwavering and urged authorities to ensure complete transparency in the handling of donations while taking strict action against the guilty. They added that the issue should not tarnish the image of the temple, which they described as the culmination of a centuries-long movement and the aspirations of millions of devotees.“Generations had to wait for the construction of Ram Temple.
Countless people dedicated their lives to the cause. If there has been any irregularity in handling donations, the law should take its course. But that should not become a reason to question the sanctity of the temple,” said Prakash Srivastav, a tour and travel operator.Similar sentiments echoed at Hanuman Garhi temple. Many residents fear that excessive political rhetoric could divert attention from Ayodhya’s transformation into one of the country’s biggest pilgrimage destinations.“People from every corner of India come here with devotion, not politics. We should protect that sentiment. The city has developed immensely in the last few years and devotees should remember Ayodhya for Lord Ram, not for controversies,” said Sunita Mishra, a shopkeeper.Mahant Rajesh Das, a local, said transparency in donation management was essential but warned against allowing the issue to become a tool for political mileage.
“Faith is above individuals. If mistakes have been made, they should be corrected through investigation and accountability,” he said.“Our elders witnessed years of struggle and court cases before the temple finally became a reality. That history cannot be forgotten because of one controversy. Justice should be done, but the dignity of Ayodhya must remain intact,” said Anil Verma, a retired schoolteacher. However, some tourists expressed disappointment over the alleged donation theft.
“Every offering made here is for maintaining the temple and serving pilgrims. It is not meant to end up in anyone’s pocket,” said Shrishti Srivastav from Sultanpur.Though the temple town has been witnessing a marginal dip in footfall over the past few weeks, cops deployed for Ram temple security attributed it to sultry weather and reopening of schools after summer vacation.“It has little to do with the controversy. A slight dip in footfall is normal during this time of the year,” a policeman said.
