Counting of votes for the repolling in the Falta Assembly constituency in West Bengal is under way on Sunday (May 24, 2026), amid tight security.

The repolling in all 285 booths of the constituency was conducted on May 21 after voting in the seat in South 24 Parganas district in the second phase of the Assembly elections on April 29 was countermanded following allegations of EVM tampering and irregularities.

Although officially six candidates are in the fray for the seat, Trinamool Congress nominee Jahangir Khan, a couple of days before the repoll, announced that he would not contest, a decision the party described as his personal. The repolling saw more than 87% of the 2.36 lakh electors turning up to vote.

BJP leads in first round of counting
As counting is under way in Falta, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Debangshu Panda is leading in the first round. There are a total of 21 rounds to be counted today.
He is being trailed by CPI(M)’s Sambhu Nath Kurmi, as per Election Commission of India data.

Ahead of the Falta repolling, Trinamool Congress candidate from the Falta Assembly seat, Jahangir Khan, on Tuesday (May 19, 2026) announced his withdrawal from the electoral contest.
“Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a special package for the development of Falta. In the interest of Falta’s development, I am withdrawing from this election,” Mr. Khan said, addressing a press conference.
