Faridabad man run over by SUV after tipping off cops; one arrested

A man was seriously injured after he was allegedly run over by an SUV by a group of men in Faridabad who suspected him of tipping off the Crime Branch about their whereabouts, police said on Thursday. One accused has been arrested, while efforts are under way to nab the others.

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media and purportedly shows the driver of the SUV hitting the victim as he tries to flee. Police said the occupants of the Scorpio first assaulted the victim, identified as Shahnaz, and then allegedly rammed the vehicle into him.

According to police and locals, an investigation team from Yamunanagar had visited Dhauj village in connection with a theft case and was searching for three residents — Jishan, Nafees and Aslam. The three allegedly fled before the police team reached them.

After the team left, they allegedly suspected that Shahnaz, a resident of Sirohi village, had informed the police about their presence. They then drove to Sirohi in a black Scorpio and allegedly assaulted him while he was grazing cattle in the fields.

As Shahnaz tried to escape, the accused allegedly chased him in the SUV and hit him. The impact trapped him between the vehicle and a wall before the SUV came to a halt after crashing into the wall. Eyewitnesses said the collision caused the wall to collapse. Shahnaz suffered serious injuries and has been admitted to the intensive care unit, police said.

VILLAGERS CAUGHT HOLD AND ASSAULTED

Villagers caught hold of the driver and his associates and allegedly assaulted them before the accused managed to flee, police said. Cross FIRs have been registered on complaints filed by both sides at Sector 56 police station.

"A case has been registered against Scorpio driver Tahseem, a resident of Dhauj village, under sections including attempt to murder. He has been arrested. The vehicle used in the incident has been seized and raids are being conducted to arrest the other accused," a Faridabad police spokesperson said. The case centres on an alleged assault and hit-and-run-like attack after the victim was suspected of sharing information with the police.
