The Tripura Police Sunday said they have arrested the father-in-law and another relative of a pregnant woman whose charred body was found near the Sadhutilla rail bridge on the outskirts of Agartala on Saturday.

The police produced the accused – identified as Uttam Sutradhar, 55, and Partha Sutradhar, 40 – before a local court on Sunday. However, till the time of filing this report, no court order had been issued.

The police said the deceased woman, Geeta Sutradhar, had lost her husband earlier last week. The woman’s husband was an employee of the ONGC, and he died owing to head injuries sustained during an accident at a project site.

On Saturday, the ONGC had handed over Rs 40,000 to Geeta Sutradhar ahead of her husband’s shradh ceremony and also promised her more compensation as per the rules.

However, her in-laws were putting pressure on her to hand over the money to them, Geeta Sutradhar’s mother alleged in a missing person’s complaint lodged at East Agartala police station on Saturday. Geeta Sutradhar’s body was discovered shortly after.

After the body was found, the police registered a case incorporating sections dealing with murder and common intention, among others, under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

“We arrested them based on a complaint from the deceased’s mother. According to the complainant, Geeta was pregnant. We are waiting for the post-mortem report, after which we will be able to share more details,” said an officer at the East Agartala Women’s police station.
