Fathima Thahiliya raises cyber harassment issue in Kerala assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: Perambra MLA Fathima Thahiliya raised the issue of cyber harassment in assembly, alleging that she had been subjected to sustained abuse on the social media and calling for stronger measures to ensure safer online spaces, particularly for women.Speaking in the House, Thahiliya said the social media had increasingly become a platform where anonymous users could target and abuse individuals without accountability.“Our social media platforms have reached a stage where anyone can say anything. Countless faceless people use these platforms to abuse others. For years, all of us have been experiencing excessive misuse of social media,” she said. The MLA said rapid advancement of artificial intelligence had made it easier to create and circulate misleading content using photographs and other digital tools.“We are living in the age of AI. Anyone can sit anywhere and create posts using someone’s photograph. Every woman should have freedom to speak in public and on the social media without fear or intimidation,” she said.Following her intervention, speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan directed Thahiliya to table screenshots of the alleged cyber abuse which she showed before the House. He assured the member that assembly officials would collect it from her and forward the material to cyber police for appropriate action.
