FC Goa clinched the AIFF Super Cup title for a record third time by defeating East Bengal FC 6-5 in a penalty shootout at the PJN Stadium, Fatorda, on Sunday, December 7, 2025.
Despite numerous scoring opportunities from both teams, neither could find the net during regular and extra time, leading to the first-ever penalty shootout in an AIFF Super Cup final. FC Goa’s captain Borja Herrera and Mohamad Basim Rashid both missed their regulation penalties. East Bengal’s Kevin Sibille, captain Saul Crespo, Miguel Ferreira, and Anwar Ali scored their penalties, while FC Goa’s Javier Siverio, Dejan Drazic, Muhammed Nemil, and David Timor found the net, pushing the match into sudden death. Udanta Kumam and Sahil Tavora converted their penalties for Goa, whereas Hamid Ahadad scored for East Bengal, but PV Vishnu missed.
How East Bengal Pipped East Bengal?
The final was dynamic from the beginning. FC Goa, buoyed by enthusiastic support from the stands, started strong with several early set-piece chances, which East Bengal’s defence eventually handled.
East Bengal soon regained composure and started creating opportunities. Their first chance came in the 12th minute when Ferreira, played behind the defence, missed the target with only goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill to beat. Bipin Singh posed a constant threat from the outset. His low centre in the 20th minute caused panic in the FC Goa defence, but Mahesh Naorem’s miscued touch kept the scores level.
With East Bengal exploiting space on the flanks, Goa made early substitutions, bringing on Udanta and Nim Dorjee Tamang for Boris Singh and Ronney Willson, which helped stabilise their midfield.
Mahesh had more opportunities towards the end of the first half. In the 43rd minute, Bipin centred for Mahesh, whose volley was saved. In injury time, Hiroshi Ibusuki played Mahesh through, but Aakash Sangwan tracked him down.
The momentum briefly shifted after halftime. Goa came out aggressively, with Ayush Chhetri’s long-range effort going over the bar right after the restart. Timor played Drazic through in the 49th minute, but he was flagged offside.
East Bengal responded with waves of attacks. Bipin, precise with his crosses, found Miguel and Ibusuki in the box around the hour mark, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
In the 74th minute, East Bengal thought they had scored when PV Vishnu played a one-two with Ferreira and unleashed a powerful shot. Goa goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari fumbled as the ball nearly crossed the goal-line, but managed to slap it away at the last moment. Appeals for a goal from East Bengal’s players, coach, and fans went unanswered.
This moment seemed to energise Goa. Brison Fernandes hit the upright with a long-range effort in the 77th minute. A minute later, Borja’s cross found Drazic unmarked, but he missed his header.
Defender Pol Moreno almost scored in the 81st minute with an apparent clearance from the halfway line that nearly found the East Bengal goal, but Gill tipped the ball onto the crossbar in time.
Goa maintained their momentum into extra time, though chances were scarce. Siverio’s rebound attempt was saved by Gill at point-blank range in the 107th minute. Gill made another crucial save in the 114th minute off a Timor header.
Despite Gill’s solid performance in goal, he could not save any penalties. Ultimately, it came down to missed spot-kicks, where East Bengal had one too many.
