Female Teen Hockey Player In Odisha Abducted, Raped By Coach, His Associates

A 15-year-old hockey trainee from Odisha's Jajpur was allegedly abducted and raped by her coach and two former coaches.

A 15-year-old female hockey trainee from Odisha’s Jajpur was allegedly abducted and raped by her coach earlier this month, news agency PTI said in a report.

Police officers on Tuesday said that two of her former coaches also acted as accomplices. The survivor filed the complaint on Monday, almost 20 days after the incident.

The victim alleged that her coach and his associates forced her into a vehicle while she was returning home and took her to a lodge and sexually assaulted her. They then threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone or tried to file a complaint with the police.

Police officers immediately detained four people for their alleged involvement in the incident, acting on the complaint.

“We have arrested one hockey coach and two former coaches. One of them has raped the girl, and the two others assisted him in the crime," Jajpur Superintendent of Police Yashpratap Shrimal was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Police have registered a case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act, including rape charges. One of the detained suspects was released as no evidence has been found against him so far, officials said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

Over the past few months, Odisha has been rocked by a surge in sexual assault cases, drawing widespread outrage and political action. In Balasore, a 20‑year‑old college student self‑immolated after alleging sexual harassment by a professor.

Two teachers in Balasore were arrested after a Class‑IX student accused them of prolonged sexual and mental harassment this month. Congress’s Odisha NSUI president, Udit Pradhan, was arrested over alleged rape of a 19‑year‑old student in Bhubaneswar.

In June, a 20‑year‑old college student was allegedly gang‑raped by 10 men near Gopalpur sea beach; the victim lodged her complaint late at night, prompting an NHRC suo motu notice and police detaining seven suspects.
