With the race for the 2026 Candidates Tournament intensifying, the spotlight shifts to Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where the FIDE Grand Swiss will be staged from September 4 to 15, 2024.
This edition of the Grand Swiss will see the absence of several of the game’s biggest stars. Former world champions Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, and Viswanathan Anand are not competing, while world number two Hikaru Nakamura and number three Fabiano Caruana have also opted out.
Despite these withdrawals, the tournament will remain highly competitive, with a strong field led by World Champion D. Gukesh, India’s top-ranked player R. Praggnanandhaa, rising star Arjun Erigaisi, and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, the former World Rapid Champion and local hero from Uzbekistan.
The FIDE Grand Swiss holds tremendous importance in the world championship cycle. The top two finishers in both the Open and Women’s events will secure direct qualification spots for the 2026 Candidates Tournament. The Candidates, in turn, decide who earns the right to challenge the reigning World Champion for the most prestigious crown in chess.
When Is It Taking Place?
The FIDE Grand Swiss takes place between September 4 and 15. There will be 11 rounds, with all of them starting at 3:30 p.m. IST, except for the final day, when the action will get underway at 2:30 p.m..
Time Control
The time control for FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 more minutes for the rest of the game. There is a 30-second increment per move from move one.
For the women’s event, it will be 90 minutes for the first 40 moves with an addition of 30 minutes after that. There is a 30-second increment per move from move one.
Tournament Format
The FIDE Grand Swiss is an 11-round tournament, played over a Swiss Format.
Open Event: The FIDE Grand Swiss Open Event will be an 11-round Swiss tournament. The time control is 100 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 more minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment per move from move one.
Women’s Event: The FIDE Grand Swiss Women’s Event will be an 11-round Swiss tournament. The time control is 90 minutes for 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game, plus a 30-second increment per move from move one.
Points System
For both the Open and Women’s events, winning a round will fetch one point, a draw 0.5 points, while a loss will result in 0 points.

Prize money
The total prize pool for the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 is US$855,000. The Open Event features a $625,000 prize fund, while the Women’s Event has $230,000 reserved as prize money.
Defending Champions
In 2023, the FIDE Grand Swiss, saw India making it a double win, with Vidit Gujrathi winning the Open section and Vaishali Rameshbabu claiming the title in the Women’s competition.
