FIFA faced an uneasy moment as World Cup ticket sales reopened, with fans running into confusion. It was expected to be a smooth rollout but quickly turned into long waits and misdirected links, leaving many supporters frustrated at the very first click.
The demand was always going to be high but the online sale was reportedly disrupted. The issue came just as the 48-team field was finalized, raising the stakes for supporters eager to secure seats. Instead of quick access, some were pushed into the wrong sales phase, while others sat in queues that barely moved.

The latest sales window opened Wednesday at 11 a.m. EDT, marking what FIFA called its “last-minute sales phase.”
Yet, many users who entered the portal were redirected to a separate queue meant for late qualifiers. The mismatch created confusion, especially for fans who had been waiting for this exact moment, according to Associated Press.Even those who got into the correct queue found themselves stuck. Reports suggested that some users were still waiting more than 90 minutes after joining. FIFA later acknowledged that links were working properly around noon, but the delay had already shaped the narrative.
This phase also introduced a key change. For the first time, fans could purchase specific seat locations instead of simply requesting ticket categories. It was meant to add clarity. Instead, the technical hiccups overshadowed that upgrade. At the same time, FIFA confirmed that not all remaining tickets were released at once. With 104 matches scheduled across the United States, Mexico and Canada between June 11 and July 19, tickets will continue to drop in stages.
FIFA hikes World Cup prices
On top of the technical glitch, pricing has become a growing concern. FIFA’s use of dynamic pricing has led to noticeable increases across several matches. In this latest window, around 40 games saw higher prices compared to earlier phases, per NPR.The jump is most striking for marquee fixtures. Category 1 tickets for the final have climbed to $10,990, a sharp rise from earlier pricing that was already considered steep.
Even group-stage matches tied to popular teams have seen steady increases, sometimes by hundreds of dollars.Lawmakers and fan groups have questioned whether the pricing model aligns with the tournament’s global appeal. In a letter to FIFA president Gianni Infantino, U.S. lawmakers wrote, “The employment of dynamic ticket pricing for the 2026 FWC starkly contrasts with FIFA’s core mission to promote the accessible and inclusive promotion and development of soccer globally,” 69 Democratic members of Congress wrote in a March 10 letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“Despite host cities’ cooperation in bringing the vision of the largest, most global World Cup in history to fruition, the consequences of dynamic pricing will make the 2026 FWC the most financially exclusionary and inaccessible to date.”For now, the gap between demand and accessibility is at the center of the conversation, with fans left weighing patience against rising costs.
