Brazil enter Friday’s Group C clash against Haiti under pressure to finally ignite their World Cup campaign.
A 1-1 draw against Morocco in their opener left Carlo Ancelotti’s side trailing surprise leaders Scotland and searching for answers after an underwhelming display. Haiti, meanwhile, suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Scotland but earned plenty of plaudits for their resilience and organisation.
On paper, however, this remains one of the most one-sided fixtures of the group stage.
Brazil Predicted Starting XI
Alisson; Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Alex Sandro; Casemiro, Bruno Guimaraes; Raphinha, Lucas Paqueta, Vinicius Junior; Matheus Cunha.
Ancelotti is expected to ring the changes after Brazil’s sluggish opener. Danilo should return to the backline, while Matheus Cunha is pushing for a start after Igor Thiago struggled to make an impact against Morocco.
Neymar remains unavailable as he continues his recovery from a calf injury, leaving Vinicius Junior and Raphinha as Brazil’s primary attacking threats.
Haiti Predicted Starting XI
Placide; Arcus, Delcroix, Ade, Experience; Bellegarde, Jean; Deedson, Casimir, Providence; Isidor.
Haiti could hand Josue Casimir a start after an encouraging cameo against Scotland. Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor is expected to lead the line once again, while veteran goalkeeper Johny Placide looks set to earn his 84th international cap.
Team News
Brazil’s only major injury concern remains Neymar, who is still working his way back to full fitness. The rest of the squad is available, giving Ancelotti the luxury of rotating after the disappointing draw with Morocco.
For Haiti, there are no fresh injury concerns. Head coach Sébastien Migné is likely to stick with the disciplined defensive structure that frustrated Scotland for long periods in the opening game.
Head-to-Head Record
History offers little encouragement for Haiti.
The two nations last met at the 2016 Copa America Centenario, where Brazil ran riot in a 7-1 victory. Across three previous meetings, Brazil have won all three and scored 17 goals.
Tactical Breakdown
This is likely to be an attack-versus-defence affair.
Brazil will dominate possession and look to stretch Haiti’s compact defensive block through the pace and trickery of Vinicius Junior and Raphinha. Cunha’s movement inside the box could also prove crucial against a Haiti side expected to sit deep and absorb pressure.
Haiti’s best hope lies in frustrating Brazil for as long as possible and exploiting counter-attacking opportunities through Isidor and Deedson. If they can keep the score level heading into the final half-hour, nerves could begin to creep into the Brazilian ranks.
Still, the gulf in quality is substantial.
Prediction
Brazil know they cannot afford another stumble and should respond with a much sharper display than they produced against Morocco.
Prediction: Brazil 3-0 Haiti.
