Brazil return to action on Friday knowing there is little room for another slip-up.

A surprisingly flat 1-1 draw against Morocco in their Group C opener has left Carlo Ancelotti’s side third in the standings, two points behind leaders Scotland.

While panic is far from setting in, the five-time world champions need a convincing response against Haiti to reassert their status as genuine title contenders.

For Haiti, the equation is much simpler: avoid defeat or risk an early World Cup exit.

The Caribbean side impressed despite losing 1-0 to Scotland in their opening game and will believe they can frustrate Brazil if they reproduce the same discipline and intensity.

Brazil Team News

Brazil are expected to retain much of the side that faced Morocco.

The biggest absentee remains Neymar, who is still recovering from a calf injury. The Santos star has resumed light training but will not be available, meaning Vinicius Junior, Raphinha and Matheus Cunha are likely to spearhead the attack once again.

Ancelotti could freshen up his midfield, with Fabinho and Bruno Guimaraes potentially coming in to ease the workload on Casemiro. Luiz Henrique is also pushing for a starting berth after impressing in training.

Brazil know a victory would put them firmly back in control of their qualification hopes ahead of a potentially decisive clash with Scotland.

Probable XI:

Alisson; Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Alex Sandro; Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães; Raphinha, Lucas Paqueta, Vinicius Junior; Matheus Cunha.

Haiti Team News

Haiti may make one notable change after their encouraging display against Scotland.

Josue Casimir is pushing for a start, while Frantzdy Pierrot could drop to the bench. Wilson Isidor is expected to continue leading the attack after making a bright start to his international career.

Veteran goalkeeper Johny Placide will once again be crucial if Haiti are to contain Brazil’s firepower.

Probable XI:

Placide; Arcus, Delcroix, Ade, Experience; Bellegarde, Jean; Deedson, Casimir, Providence; Isidor.

Match Preview

Brazil’s opener raised more questions than answers.

While Vinicius Junior produced a moment of brilliance against Morocco, the Selecao struggled to impose themselves for long periods. Ancelotti admitted afterward that his side must improve if they are to challenge for a first World Cup title since 2002.

History, however, is firmly on Brazil’s side.

The two nations have met three times previously, with Brazil winning all three encounters and scoring 17 goals in the process. Their most recent meeting ended in a crushing 7-1 victory for the South Americans at the 2016 Copa America.

Haiti will draw confidence from their spirited performance against Scotland, but facing Brazil represents a completely different challenge.

Another defeat, combined with a Morocco win over Scotland, could mathematically eliminate Haiti from the competition.

Prediction

Brazil are unlikely to be as wasteful as they were against Morocco.

Haiti’s organisation should keep things competitive early on, but the Selecao’s attacking quality ought to shine through as the game progresses.

Prediction: Brazil 3-0 Haiti
