Germany and Ivory Coast meet in a crucial Group E clash in Toronto, with knockout qualification at stake. Both sides won their opening matches and now target a last-32 berth.

Germany and Ivory Coast square off in a pivotal Group E showdown at Toronto Stadium (BMO Field) on Sunday, with a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages potentially on the line.

The four-time world champions made the perfect start to their campaign, demolishing World Cup debutants Curacao 7-1 to claim top spot in the group. Germany’s emphatic victory eased concerns about their recent World Cup struggles, having failed to progress beyond the group stage in both 2018 and 2022.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side now stand one win away from securing qualification for the Round of 32 and ending that unwanted streak once and for all.

However, Ivory Coast will provide a far sterner test.

The three-time African champions opened their tournament with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, with Amad Diallo scoring a late winner to hand Emerse Faé’s men all three points. Another positive result would put the Ivorians on the brink of the knockout rounds.

Germany have no fresh injury concerns following their dominant opening performance.

Nagelsmann is expected to retain the core of the side that dismantled Curacao, although Deniz Undav is pushing for a starting role after coming off the bench to register a goal and two assists. Leroy Sané could be the player at risk of making way, having endured a relatively quiet outing in the opener.

Jamal Musiala is expected to continue in the No.10 role behind the attack.

For Ivory Coast, Elye Wahi remains unavailable after reportedly being denied entry into Canada amid an ongoing investigation in France. Defender Evan Ndicka is also a doubt as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury that ruled him out of the Ecuador match.
