Iran’s opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against New Zealand generated headlines both on and off the field, with midfielder Mohammad Mohebi’s goal celebration becoming a major talking point across social media.
Mohebi scored Iran’s second goal in a dramatic 2-2 draw at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, helping his side come from behind twice to secure a valuable point in Group G. After powering home a header to bring Iran level, the winger celebrated with a gun-firing gesture that quickly sparked debate online. The reaction was immediate, with some supporters calling on FIFA to investigate the celebration and even demanding disciplinary action against the player.

The match unfolded in a politically sensitive atmosphere. Despite FIFA restrictions, numerous spectators displayed Iran’s pre-revolutionary flag throughout the stadium. Demonstrators also gathered outside the venue before kick-off to voice opposition to the Iranian government.
Security measures were extensive, with fans subjected to bag checks and metal detector screenings. Some supporters wearing clothing featuring the pre-revolutionary flag were reportedly instructed to conceal the symbols before entering. However, once inside, the flag remained visible across various sections of the crowd on banners, shirts and handheld displays.

National Anthem Booed?
Tensions were also evident during the national anthem. Some Iranian supporters turned away from the pitch, while others responded with whistles and boos.
Following the game, Iran’s other goalscorer Ramin Rezaeian dismissed questions about the crowd’s reaction during the anthem.
“If there is any problem between us, it is our business, it is none of your business," said a brusque but polite Rezaeian when asked about the booing and whistling during the anthem before the game.
“I respect you, but this is something between us and we’re going to settle it, don’t worry."
‘Making The Situation More And More Difficult’
Iran coach Amir Ghalenoei also expressed frustration with logistical issues affecting his squad.
“They delayed our arrivals, they are forcing us to go back early without time for recovery," said Ghalenoei, whose side have been hit by visa issues and a training camp relocation, speaking to journalists after the 2-2 draw with New Zealand.
“They are making the situation more and more difficult, facing us with more hurdles, but we’re not going to let that stop us from doing our best," he added.
The combination of football, politics and controversy ensured Iran’s FIFA World Cup opener remained one of the tournament’s most discussed matches.
