The Netherlands logged their first win of the FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with their 5-1 triumph against Sweden at the Houston Stadium in USA on Saturday in their Group F clash.
Brian Brobbey opened the scoring in the 7th minute before doubling down on his tally ten minutes later to give Ronld Koeman’s Oranje the lead before Cody Gakpo bagged a double in the second half, and Crysencio Summerville added one.
Brobbey, who came in as the only change made by Koeman on the day from the side that started their 2-2 stalemate against Japan in their previous assignment, repaid his manager’s faith in him early in the game as he put the finishing touches on a brilliant Dutch move to take the lead before Sweden even settled in.
The 24-year-old Dutchman added to his side’s lea in the 17th minute as he was on hand yet agin to guide the ball into the net as Netherlands seemed to have good value for their advantage.
Sweden had a goal chalked off for off-side as Lagerbielke’s headed found the back of the net, but the Blagult’s joy was cut short.
Gakpo joined in on the party early after resumption as he got on the scoresheet with the second period still in its infancy to triple their lead. The Liverpool winger doubled his tally shortly after as he cut in on his right to beat the keeper yet again.
Anthony Elanga pulled done back for Sweden as he netted just shy of the hot mark to cut down on the Dutch lead. Sweden continued to push in hopes of cutting the deficit to half, but Netherlands survived multiple slit-edged chances as Ayari found his shot hit the wrong side of the post.
Elanga continued to run riot at the Dutch backline and set Alexander Isak up for a chance from outside the box, but Bart Verbruggen was up to the task as he thwarted it on call to hold up the lead.
Summerville, who netted in Netherlands’ opener, completed the rout as he made it five for the Dutchman in a thoroughly entertaining performance.
