England’s path to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage is firmly in its own hands.
After being frustrated by Ghana in their previous outing, Thomas Tuchel’s side now have a golden opportunity to wrap up top spot in Group L when they take on already-eliminated Panama at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.
The Three Lions began their campaign in emphatic fashion with a thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia, a performance that had many tipping them to cruise through the group. But reality hit in Boston, where Ghana’s disciplined defensive display and tactical organisation under Carlos Queiroz forced England into a frustrating 0-0 draw.
The result delayed England’s qualification but did little to dent their chances. A win over Panama should be enough to secure first place in the group, unless Ghana produce an unlikely swing in goal difference in their final fixture.
Panama, meanwhile, have nothing but pride to play for after suffering back-to-back defeats against Croatia and Ghana. Despite their early exit, Thomas Christiansen’s side have been far more competitive than the standings suggest. Three of their last four defeats have come by a single-goal margin, highlighting a team that has defended well but struggled to turn promising performances into goals.
Panama predicted lineup (3-4-3)
Mosquera; Blackman, Ramos, Córdoba; Murillo, Harvey, Martínez, Andrade; Bárcenas, Waterman, Rodríguez.
England predicted lineup (4-2-3-1)
Pickford; Spence, Konsa, Guéhi, O’Reilly; Anderson, Bellingham; Saka, Rogers, Rashford; Kane.
Head-to-head
England have faced Panama only once in senior international football, winning 6-1 in the group stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as England recorded the biggest World Cup win in their history.
Team form
England: D-W-W-W-L
England remain unbeaten in four matches under Thomas Tuchel. After defeating Croatia 4-2 in their opener, they were held to a goalless draw by Ghana despite dominating possession. Before the tournament, they also beat Costa Rica 3-0 and New Zealand 1-0.
Panama: L-L-D-W-L
Panama’s biggest issue has been converting chances. They controlled possession against Ghana but failed to score before losing 1-0, while another narrow defeat to Croatia ended their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.
Match prediction
England’s draw with Ghana exposed some weaknesses against a compact defence, but there is little reason for alarm. Tuchel’s side still boast one of the tournament’s strongest squads, and with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka leading the attack, they should have enough quality to overcome Panama.
The Central Americans are likely to stay organised and make life difficult, but England’s superior depth and attacking firepower should eventually tell.
Prediction: Panama 0-2 England
