Portugal and Uzbekistan meet tonight in a crucial Group K showdown, with both sides still searching for their first win of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Portugal were expected to make a strong start to their campaign but were instead held to a disappointing draw by DR Congo. Meanwhile, World Cup debutants Uzbekistan suffered a 3-1 defeat to Colombia, though the scoreline perhaps did not fully reflect their competitiveness.
As a result, both teams head into this contest under pressure. Portugal know that another slip-up could leave them with significant work to do against Colombia in their final group-stage fixture, while Uzbekistan have an opportunity to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive with a positive result.
The Cristiano Ronaldo Debate Rolls On
Much of the pre-match discussion continues to revolve around Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 41-year-old remains Roberto Martínez’s first-choice striker despite growing scrutiny over his role in the side. Ronaldo came under criticism following Portugal’s opening match, with some observers arguing he disrupted a promising attacking move involving Bruno Fernandes.
Former France striker Thierry Henry was among those to question Ronaldo’s approach, saying: “The team needs to score, not you."
Martínez, however, has shown no indication that he is prepared to drop his captain, and Ronaldo is expected to lead the line once again.
Team News
Portugal’s projected lineup remains largely unchanged despite the underwhelming opener. The midfield trio of Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and João Neves remains one of the strongest units in the tournament, while Bernardo Silva will be tasked with providing creativity in the final third.
For Uzbekistan, much attention will focus on Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov. The highly rated centre-back faces arguably the biggest challenge of his international career as he attempts to keep Ronaldo quiet.
Uzbekistan will also look to experienced striker Eldor Shomurodov and creative forward Abbosbek Fayzullayev for inspiration in attack.
Predicted Lineups
Portugal (4-2-3-1): Diogo Costa; João Cancelo, Tomás Araújo, Renato Veiga, Nuno Mendes; João Neves, Vitinha; Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Pedro Neto; Cristiano Ronaldo.
Uzbekistan (3-4-3): Utkir Yusupov; Rustamjon Ashurmatov, Abdukodir Khusanov, Abdulla Abdullaev; Behruz Karimov, Akmal Mozgovoy, Otabek Shukurov, Sherzod Nasrullaev; Abbosbek Fayzullayev, Eldor Shomurodov, Oston Urunov.
Head-to-Head
This will be the first-ever senior international meeting between Portugal and Uzbekistan. The nations have never faced each other in a competitive or friendly match at senior level.
Prediction
Portugal looked surprisingly flat in their opener and struggled to create chances despite dominating possession. Uzbekistan, however, showed enough defensive organisation against Colombia to suggest they can make life difficult for the European side.
Still, Portugal’s superior quality should eventually tell.
Prediction: Portugal 1-0 Uzbekistan.
