Ahead of England's final Group L showdown against Panama at the FIFA World Cup 2026, manager Thomas Tuchel has fiercely defended his controversial squad selection. The German tactician came under heavy fire from experts and fans alike after key right-back Reece James was ruled out of Saturday's match due to a hamstring injury.James suffered the injury during England’s drab, goalless draw against Ghana. The Chelsea captain did not travel with the squad to New Jersey, remaining at the team's base in Kansas City to focus on his recovery. Despite losing one of his primary defensive weapons, a characteristically stubborn Tuchel insisted he has absolutely no regrets about picking only three natural full-backs for the tournament.

With Newcastle United's Tino Livramento already pulling out earlier due to a calf problem, James' injury leaves Djed Spence as England's solitary fit, recognized full-back.

The critical lack of specialized options has raised serious eyebrows, forcing Tuchel to look at makeshift alternatives. Midfielder Nico O'Reilly and veteran centre-back Dan Burn are expected to fill in at left-back, while central defenders Jarell Quansah and Ezri Konsa remain options to cover the right side."I selected this squad, so I am completely happy with the characteristics and strengths the players give us," a defiant Tuchel told reporters.

"We would love to have every key player available, but when they aren't, we find solutions. That is what tournament football is all about. We move on."Tuchel downplayed the severity of James' setback, expressing extreme confidence that the defender will participate in the knockout rounds should England advance. "It is a minor hamstring issue. He is on an accelerated rehabilitation program, and we strongly believe he will feature later in the tournament," the manager added. While the defensive unit looks dangerously thin, the Three Lions received a massive shot in the arm at the other end of the pitch. Talismanic winger Bukayo Saka has been declared fully fit to start after overcoming an Achilles tendinitis issue. Furthermore, midfield pillars Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson have both shrugged off minor knocks and returned to training, handed clean bills of health for the Saturday night encounter.
