Peter Shilton's record had stood for decades. On Saturday night in Miami, Jordan Pickford finally took it.By starting England's quarterfinal against Norway at Hard Rock Stadium, Pickford made his 18th World Cup appearance, breaking the record he had previously shared with the legendary Shilton and becoming the most capped England goalkeeper in World Cup history.

It is a record that reflects not just longevity, but consistent excellence at the highest level over three tournaments spanning eight years.Pickford made his World Cup debut in Russia 2018, where England reached the semifinals under Gareth Southgate. He was back in Qatar 2022, helping England to the quarterfinals before their exit to France. Now in 2026, under Thomas Tuchel, he has started all five of England's matches and on Saturday night produced one of his best performances of the tournament, pulling off a stunning point-blank save against Erling Haaland in the first half to keep England in the match when they trailed 1-0.

Shilton, also a goalkeeper, had set the previous record across three World Cups of his own, Spain 1982, Argentina 1986 and Italia 1990 , playing 17 matches in total. The fact that both England record-holders are goalkeepers is a testament to the position's unique place in football, only a goalkeeper can realistically appear in every match of a World Cup campaign across multiple tournaments.Beyond the World Cup record, Pickford has now appeared in 30 consecutive major tournament matches for England when factoring in the European Championships and a remarkable run of consistency for the Everton shot-stopper who has been England's undisputed number one across four major tournaments.Captain Harry Kane, meanwhile, drew level with Shilton's previous tally of 17 World Cup appearances against Norway, meaning England's two longest-serving World Cup players both wrote their names into the record books on the same night in Miami.
