Construction of the Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum at Sugandhagiri in Wayanad is progressing steadily, with the first phase expected to be ready for inauguration by the middle of November 2026, Agriculture Minister T. Siddique has said.

He was speaking after reviewing the work on Sunday. The museum, coming up on a 10-acre site, has completed around 60% of the construction work in its first phase, Mr. Siddique said.

Envisaged as a centre to preserve and showcase the history and heritage of Kerala’s tribal communities, the museum will document the culture, traditions and indigenous knowledge systems of tribal people in Wayanad and other parts of the State. It will also highlight the role played by tribal communities in India’s freedom struggle.

According to officials, detailed research by experts has already documented the lives and contributions of more than 120 tribal freedom fighters from Wayanad, including several whose role in the freedom movement has remained largely unrecognised.

The project is being implemented by the Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs in association with the Kerala government. On behalf of the State government, Kerala Institute for Research, Training and Development Studies of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (KIRTADS) is overseeing the execution of the project.
