Switzerland faced Colombia in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match on Tuesday (July 7) and defeated them 4-3 in the penalty shootout to book their place in the quarterfinals. Davinson Sánchez and Cucho Hernández missed the second and fourth penalties, respectively, for the South American side, while Manuel Akanji was the only Swiss player to miss from the spot. The victory over Colombia was a historic one for Switzerland as it ended their 72-year wait for a place in the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals.
