Erling Haaland scored two goals for Norway in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 match against Brazil on Sunday (July 5). He opened his account in the 79th minute of the match played at New York New Jersey Stadium and then scored the second goal in the 90th minute. The brace by Haaland against the Selecao not only helped Norway qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinals, but it also helped him extend his tally of goals to seven in this year’s tournament.

Haaland has played four matches for Norway in his maiden FIFA World Cup and scored seven goals. He is tied with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the list of players with the most goals in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Messi has also scored seven times in four matches for Argentina, whereas Mbappe has seven goals and two assists to his name in five matches for France.

The seven goals each by Mbappe, Messi, and Haaland in this year’s World Cup have created a new record. It is the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup that three players have managed to score at least seven goals in one edition of the tournament.

In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, two players—Messi and Mbappe—had managed to score at least seven goals, but in the FIFA World Cup 2026, three players have scored at least seven goals.
