Five people, including three women, were killed and four others injured after a tempo-rickshaw they were travelling in was hit by a speeding SUV in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, police said on Friday (March 27, 2026).
According to the police, the incident took place around 3 a.m. in Thatipur town of Gwalior when a speeding car hit the rickshaw from behind, which was carrying nine members of a family.

Murar city Superintendent of Police (CSP) Atul Soni told The Hindu that the driver of the SUV, Aman Sharma, and his friend Abhishek who was in the car were arrested from the spot.
Mr. Soni said that an information had been received at the police control room about an SUV hitting a vehicle at Thatipur bus stand after which a first response vehicle (FRV) was dispatched.
“Even as the FRV was inquiring about it, another information came that an SUV had hit a tempo at a nearby highway. When we investigated, it turned out to be the same car,” he said.
The CSP said that the tempo was hit from behind and crushed into a tree, resulting in the death of five people.
“They were declared brought dead at a government hospital while the injured are being treated. One person is in a serious condition,” he added.
The victims were returning from the Sheetla Mata temple in Gwalior. While four of the deceased hailed from parts of Gwalior, a 60-year-old woman relative of theirs was from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut
The officer said that the accused also sustained minor injuries and his car was also damaged, and were nabbed from the spot only.
He said that two separate cases have been lodged against the accused, including one under BNS section 106(1) [causing death by negligence].
“A medical examination has been conducted on the accused to ascertain if he was driving under influence and further charges will be added based on the report,” Mr. Soni said.
