In two separate incidents of electrocution in Maharashtra, five members of a family died after coming in contact with a live wire around a farmland in Jalgaon district, while a 17-year-old youth lost his life in Mumbai’s Bhandup area after stepping on a fallen electricity cable amid heavy rains, police said on Wednesday (August 20, 2025).
In Jalgaon, the tragic incident occurred late Tuesday (August 19, 2025) night in Varkhedi village, Erandol taluka, but came to light on Wednesday morning. The deceased have been identified as Vikas Ramlal Pawara (30), his wife Suman Vikas Pawara (25), their sons Pawan (4) and Kaval (3), and Vikas’s mother Lilabai Jamsingh Pawara (60). A two-year-old girl, Durga Vikas Pawara, miraculously escaped unhurt, officials from district administration said.
According to police, the family accidentally touched an electrified wire fence installed around the farmland, owned by Bandu Yuvraj Patil, to protect crops from wild animals. A villager passing by noticed the family lying motionless and a toddler crying nearby. He alerted the village head and the police, following which a team rushed to the spot and took the victims to the district hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.
During the inspection, officials also found two dead wild boars near the fence, indicating the high voltage of the live wire. The rescued toddler is currently being looked after at the Erandol Police Station until relatives are traced. A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway.
“The passerby tried to wake them up but got no response and immediately informed the village head and the police. A team of personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the victims to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival,” an official from police station said.
An official from the Jalgaon district administration said, “Today, there has been no rainfall in the district, but due to the high level of moisture in the soil, the risk of electric shock is higher.”
The official added, “According to initial reports, an electric wire fence had been installed around the farmland, registered in the names of Bandu Yuvraj Patil and Alkabai Bandu Patil, to protect crops from wild animals. The accident occurred when members of the Pawara family came in contact with the electrified fence.”
The victims were residents of Osrani village, Khaknar taluka, in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh.
In Mumbai’s Bhandup area, Deepak Pille (17) died on Tuesday (August 19, 2025) after coming in contact with a fallen high-tension cable submerged under rainwater along LBS Road.
Police said Pille was walking home with headphones on and failed to notice warnings from locals. He collapsed after the shock and was declared dead before admission to the hospital.
Eyewitnesses said they tried to warn Deepak by calling out to him to move aside and avoid walking towards the cables, but he was wearing headphones and did not hear them. A video that surfaced online shows Deepak walking on a heavily waterlogged road as a bus passed nearby. Unaware of the exposed live wire beneath the water, he continued walking and collapsed moments later after receiving a severe electric shock.
Residents alleged that they had submitted several complaints to civic authorities about loose and exposed wires in the area, but no action was taken. Police have launched an investigation into the incident and urged citizens to exercise caution while walking on flooded roads during the monsoon.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season, especially in waterlogged areas where exposed live wires pose a serious risk.
