Five-year-old boy drowns in rain-fed river in MP’s Shahdol

Bhopal: A five-year-old boy drowned in a rain-fed river in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol district after reportedly returning to the waterbody alone while playing with other children, police said.

The incident took place on Saturday in Mithauri village under Singhpur police station limits, while the post-mortem was conducted on Sunday.Police identified the deceased as Divyansh Kol, 5 , son of Kamlesh Kol, a resident of Mithauri village. According to the preliminary investigation, the child wentto bathe in the Utahila seasonal river with other children from the village.Police said the boy’s father later reached the riverbank and brought the children back home.

The family believed Divyansh also returned with the group. However, he is suspected to have gone back to the river without informing anyone.When the child could not be found at home for a long time, family members and villagers launched a search. During the search, they reached the riverbank and found the boy submerged in the water. He was pulled out and rushed for medical assistance, but he had already died, police said.

After receiving information about the incident, Singhpur police reached the spot and initiated inquest proceedings before sending the body for post-mortem examination. The autopsy was conducted on Sunday.Police said the preliminary investigation suggests that the child died due to drowning. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report is received. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
