Palm Beach International Airport in Florida has officially been renamed after US President Donald J. Trump. The change took effect on July 9.

The new name is President Donald J. Trump International Airport. The renaming became official following a law being signed by Governor Ron DeSantis in March this year.

It became active this week, leading to the formal change in the airport’s name. The Secretary of the US Department of Transportation announced the change.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT," he said in a tweet on Thursday. The tweet also contained a video that was edited to show the transition of the name on an inter-state sign.

Palm Beach International Airport is located near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. The area has long been associated with the 47th President of the US, Donald J Trump.

“We have a President who lives in our backyard, we might as well honour him. People need to be honoured for the commitment they make to our country," said a woman, seen at the airport in a video posted by BBC.

The changing of the name of the airport cost $5.5 million, according to a report by Reuters. Authorities are expected to update signage and official records to reflect the new name.

In an apparent bid to justify the name change, President Trump’s son Eric Trump said, speaking with Fox News, “I don’t think there’s anybody more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump in maybe all of Florida."

The airport, reportedly, serves 8 to 8.6 million passengers each year. It is one of the key travel hubs in southern Florida.

After Trump took office, as the President of the United States, for the second time, his name has replaced older names of a planned class of Navy warships, a visa-program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website, and federal savings account for children.

Further details on the transition process are likely to be shared by state and airport officials in the coming days.
