More than 3.15 crore devotees took a holy dip in the Ganga and at the Sangam by 12 pm on Sunday on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. Flower petals were showered on the devotees who gathered at the Sangam in Prayagraj for the ‘snaan’ on this sacred occasion.
Amid dense fog and spine chilling weather, devotees began to gather at the Ganga and Sangam ghats from midnight. Visuals captured a helicopter showering flower petals over the large crowd of devotees at the ghat during the Magh Mela.
Earlier, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath extended his greetings on Mauni Amavasya, wishing for “new energy, enthusiasm, and resolve." In a post on X, he welcomed the devotees arriving at Sangam for the holy dip and expressed his heartfelt wishes to all the revered Akharas, Dharmacharyas, saints, sadhaks, kalpavasis, and devotees. He prayed for the blessings of Mother Ganga and Lord Surya to fulfill everyone’s heartfelt wishes and bring new energy, enthusiasm, and determination into their lives.
Security measures were reinforced at the Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj as a large number of devotees gathered for the holy dip during the early hours on Sunday. According to police authorities, around 50 lakh devotees had taken the holy dip at the Sangam between 6 pm the previous day and 4 am on Sunday. The ritual bath commenced at midnight, with heavy footfall at the ghats despite thick fog in the region.
Speaking to ANI, Prayagraj Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar said that despite thick fog in the region, devotees from several areas continued to arrive in large numbers. He said, “…Proper security arrangements have been made…Devotees are coming in large numbers to take a holy dip. There has been thick fog since midnight, despite the fact that we are witnessing heavy footfall."
Officials said that crowd management, traffic control plans, and continuous monitoring were implemented to ensure a smooth flow of devotees throughout the day.
