A 19-year-old woman has accused her father of raping her repeatedly over several years, beginning when she was a minor in Gujarat’s Rajkot, said officials.

The case came to light after the young woman went missing from her home in Upleta. Her father initially filed a missing person complaint at the local police station, following which teams from the Upleta police and the Rajkot Rural Local Crime Branch launched a search operation.

The woman was soon traced and brought in for questioning.

During interrogation, the woman made serious allegations against her father, dramatically altering the direction of the investigation.

Preliminary findings suggest that the sexual abuse had been taking place inside the family home for nearly four years, without the knowledge of other family members.

After recording the woman’s statement, police questioned her father. Officials said the accused confessed to the crime during interrogation.

A case was subsequently registered at the Upleta police station under sections related to rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and the accused was arrested.

“The victim provided a detailed account of the abuse, and the accused admitted to his involvement. He has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway," a police officer said.

Recounting her ordeal, the survivor told police that her father had been sexually exploiting her since she was a minor.

She said the assaults usually took place at night and that she was threatened into silence. According to her statement, the accused would play pornographic videos before abusing her and increase the television volume to drown out her cries.

“He subjected me to forced sexual acts for the past three to four years," she told investigators.

As part of the probe, investigators recovered evidence from the room where the alleged assaults took place. Items including gel, a safety kit and a mobile phone were seized and sent for forensic examination.

Police said the recovered material corroborates the survivor’s statement and will be included in the chargesheet.

The investigation also revealed another alarming possibility. Police said the accused is suspected of having sexually assaulted his niece over the past few years as well.

Rajkot Rural police said this angle is being examined separately. “After counselling, the niece’s statement will be recorded and appropriate legal action will be taken," an officer said.
