A case of medical negligence has once again surfaced, putting the spotlight on Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a patient who is in a serious condition was allegedly forced to walk to the toilet on Monday.
According to reports, the patient identified as Biswajit Samanta was brought to the hospital’s trauma care unit on Monday morning with complaints of severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, and bleeding from the nose. The family members alleged that his condition stabilised after initial treatment, but when the relatives asked to the hospital staff to help Samanta go to toilet, they directed them to a Sulabh facility which was roughly 50 metres away and refused to provide any assistance.
The relatives alleged that Samanta was forced to walk to the toilet after no stretcher or assistance was provided to him, which led to his collapse. Later, the doctors declared him dead, the report said.
The incident comes days after a separate tragedy at the same hospital, where a man died after being trapped in a malfunctioning lift, raising serious concerns over systemic lapses, infrastructure gaps and patient safety at the state-run facility.

Recounting her ordeal, Ila Samanta, wife of Biswajit Samanta, said, “We brought him here last night. He was bleeding from the nose. After receiving some treatment, he appeared to stabilise slightly. Then, he asked to use the restroom. However, no one provided a stretcher. An ailing man was forced to walk to the restroom, leading to this tragic outcome. How could they possibly ask a sick patient to walk?"
The family said that they repeatedly asked for the stretcher from the hospital staff, but it was not provided to them, leading to his death.
The incident has triggered protests by relatives at the hospital, who accused the management of the hospital and its systemic failures in patient care and infrastructure. As of now, the hospital authorities have not yet issued a formal statement on the allegations.
