Tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have intensified as the United States continues its naval blockade in the region. In a fresh development, a US destroyer reportedly opened fire before taking control of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

The ship, identified as the Touska, was intercepted after it allegedly attempted to evade the US naval blockade. The incident comes at a time when maritime activity in the region remains under close watch due to ongoing conflict risks.

China calls for talks

Reacting to the development, China has urged both sides to return to dialogue. Foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing was “concerned" about the situation.

Speaking at a news conference, he described the seizure as a “forcible interception" by US forces, according to AFP. China called for peace talks between Iran and the United States to resume at the earliest.

Criticism of US blockade

China has earlier criticised the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, calling it “irresponsible and dangerous". The latest incident has added to those concerns, as tensions in the region continue to rise.

The blockade has affected shipping routes and raised questions about the safety of commercial vessels moving through nearby waters.

Oil ties and strategic concerns

China’s position is also linked to its energy needs. The country is estimated to purchase around 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports. Experts believe the US blockade could be aimed at putting pressure on China to influence Iran’s actions.

This has made the situation in the Strait of Hormuz more sensitive, as any disruption could impact global energy supplies.

Call to keep waterway open

China has stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is an international waterway and should remain open for navigation. It said keeping the route accessible is in the common interest of all countries.

Beijing urged all sides to avoid further escalation and work together to prevent the situation from worsening. It also said it is ready to coordinate with the international community to help reduce tensions in the region.
