Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Ange Postecoglou to replace Nuno Espírito Santo, who left the club after a severe fall-out with the ownership and director Edu since the beginning of the season.
Postecoglou joins the side in the middle of the season and is expected to oversee their weekend clash against last year’s runners-up Arsenal away at the Emirates Stadium. He’ll be accompanied by most of his support staff, who played a role in Tottenham Hotspur’s first competitive trophy win — the Europa League — in 17 years.
Forest are in the same competition this year after Crystal Palace’s early demotion to the Conference League. Nuno has been credited with getting them to that level, too, considering it is the first time in 40 years they’ll be playing in Europe, thanks to his uber-pragmatic style of play. He is said to have fallen out with Edu since his appointment from Arsenal at the start of the season, which spilled over to his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis.
“We are bringing a coach to the Club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies," Marinakis said in a statement announcing Postecoglou’s arrival. “His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.
“After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies. Ange has the credentials and the track record to do this, and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey," he added.
As per many reports, Nuno’s public revelation of the relationship breakdown with Marinakis was the last straw.
“I don’t know exactly but I’m being honest with you, it is not the same," Nuno had said at a pre-match press conference in August. “The reason behind it I do not know. What I said last week or two weeks ago was my concern and why I was worried about where we were going (as a club). What I said, I said it with respect. The reality is that the relationship is not what it used to be. It was a respectful relationship based on trust and sharing opinions but now it is not so good," he added.
