Alexander Isak expressed his deep gratitude to his former club Newcastle after completing a British-record £125 million ($167 million) transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.

The 25-year-old striker joined Premier League champions Arne Slot’s team on Monday with a six-year contract.

Isak’s move to Anfield concluded a prolonged saga, during which he effectively went on strike to secure a transfer. He did not participate in Newcastle’s pre-season or their first three Premier League matches.

In his absence, Newcastle fans turned against their former favourite. During Saturday’s goalless draw at Leeds United, they chanted, “We don’t care about Isak. He doesn’t care about me, all we care about is NUFC."

The Swedish forward scored 54 goals in 86 league appearances for Newcastle and also netted in the League Cup final earlier this year, helping the Magpies win their first major trophy in 56 years.

What Alexander Isak Wrote For Newcastle After Joining Liverpool?

“I want to express my gratitude to my teammates, the staff, and above all, the city of Newcastle and all the amazing supporters for the three unforgettable years we shared together," Isak said in a statement on Instagram.

“Together, we have written history and brought the club to the place where it truly belongs. It has been an honour to be part of the journey."

He added, “Forever grateful. Thank you, Newcastle."

Underscoring the chill over a once-celebrated relationship was Newcastle’s terse 37-word statement, issued 18 hours before his Instagram post, which confirmed the British record sale but omitted any mention of his goals or the League Cup trophy he helped them win last season.

The Newcastle United Supporters’ Club wrote on X on Monday, “Whatever Alexander Isak goes on to achieve in his career, he will always be remembered for the way he has acted this summer. His behaviour has permanently destroyed his reputation in football."

During the transfer window, Newcastle signed Germany international forward Nick Woltemade and DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa.

The Magpies released a brief statement on Monday following Isak’s departure, stating, “Newcastle can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions."
