Former Kerala Chief Minister and veteran leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist) VS Achuthanandan passed away at the age of 101.

Achuthanandan was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram following a heart attack.

Who Is VS Achuthanandan?

Hailed as Kerala’s “revolutionary sun" by his followers, VS Achuthanandan turned 101 last October. He was born on October 20, 1923, in Alappuzha district of Kerala.

VS Achuthanandan studied up to Class VII before stepping into politics through trade union activism in the erstwhile Travancore.

VS Achuthanadan’s Political Career

VS Achuthanandan, fondly known as VS, served as Kerala’s Chief Minister from 2006 to 2011. He had also held the position of Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly for 15 years.

In 1964, Achuthanandan left the Communist Party of India’s (CPI) national council to become one of the founding members of the breakaway CPI(M), according to The Hindu.

The Kerala ex-CM served as the secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) from 1980 to 1992.
