Former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joe Haden shared a worrying update from Mexico. The three-time Pro Bowler said he felt “spooked” while vacationing in Cabo as cartel violence escalated in parts of the country.
He appeared briefly on his podcast to confirm he was safe and trying to return to the United States. His comments came after reports linked fresh unrest to the reported killing of cartel leader El Mencho. As tensions spread across regions in Mexico, Joe Haden chose to address the situation directly. He did not speculate. He spoke plainly about wanting to get home.
Joe Haden says he is trying to leave Mexico after cartel unrest spreads
Joe Haden joined the “Deebo & Joe podcast” alongside former Steelers teammate James Harrison.
He opened with honesty.“I should’ve listened to you, Deebo,” Haden said during the episode. “Honestly, I’m a little spooked, brother. I can’t even lie to you. It’s getting really tricky on this side of the world. I need to get back, get my feet planted on U.S. territory.”
The unrest followed reports that Mexican Special Forces, with alleged U.S. support, carried out an operation targeting Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
After those reports surfaced, clashes reportedly broke out in parts of Jalisco, including Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta.According to the Associated Press, at least 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard have died amid the violence. Authorities reported roadblocks and disruptions in some areas. Airports and transportation hubs often become pressure points during cartel retaliation, which adds to the tension for travelers.Haden said on the same podcast that he was trying to secure a flight out of Cabo. “I got a flight I can get now,” he told Harrison. “I really tried to get on this show to show you my face, let you know I am good, but I really do need to slide.” He exited the episode shortly after making those remarks. Many fans prayed for his safety. A fan said, “Prayers for safe travels, Joe🙏🏼. Deebo, first time I ever saw you so shook!!”Another fan asked for an update and remarked, "Need an update when he is back and safe, please, sir.”Another said, “How bout wait til he's back to talk about it? All content shouldn't be shared in real time.”Importantly, Cabo is located nearly 800 miles from Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta, where the heaviest clashes reportedly occurred. Haden did not report any direct violence near him. Still, uncertainty surrounding cartel retaliation left him unsettled. Joe Haden, now 36, played 12 NFL seasons and earned three Pro Bowl selections. His recent remark, however, football headlines gave way to a different concern.
