Shriprakash Jaiswal, former Union Minister and Congress leader, passed away in Kanpur at 81. He served as Mayor, MP, Union Minister of Coal, and UP Congress President.

Former Union Minister and Congress leader Shriprakash Jaiswal passed away on Friday in Kanpur after a prolonged illness at the age of 81.

The minister was rushed to the Kanpur Cardiology Hospital today as his condition worsened. He was examined by a team of doctors and was declared dead upon arrival.

Jaiswal’s political journey began with his election as the Mayor of Kanpur in 1989. A prominent leader in the region, he went on to win the Kanpur Lok Sabha seat three consecutive times in 1999, 2004 and 2009.

He later served in the Congress-led UPA government under Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh as Minister of State for Home Affairs from May 2004 to May 2009, before being elevated to the Cabinet as Union Minister of Coal in January 2011, a post he held until the end of the government’s term in May 2014.

Jaiswal also served as the President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 2000 to 2002.

Born in Kanpur, he completed his studies at BNSD Inter College and got married to Maya Rani in 1967. He had two sons and a daughter.
