Former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar moved out of the Vice-President’s Enclave on Monday (September 1, 2025), more than a month after his resignation from the post. He had resigned on July 21, the first day of the Parliament’s Monsoon Session, citing health reasons.

He has shifted out to Indian Lok Dal President Abhay Chautala’s farmhouse in Chhatarpur in the Capital, till the Central Public Works Department can ready his retirement home. He has been allotted a type-8, which is the largest category of the official bungalows at APJ Abdul Kalam Road. It is estimated that it will take about three months for repairs and renovation.

Mr. Dhankhar credits Mr. Chautala’s grandfather and former deputy Prime Minister of India Devi Lal as his political mentor for converting him from a “pleader” to a “leader”.

In the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Devi Lal offered Mr. Dhankhar a Janata Dal ticket to contest from the Jhunjhunu Lok Sabha seat in Rajasthan. He also inducted Mr. Dhankhar in the council of Ministers appointing him as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs.

“It is his home, he is welcome to stay as long as he wishes to,” Mr. Chautala said. He refused to comment on the events leading to Mr. Dhankhar’s resignation. Asked whether Mr. Dhankhar should clear the air on abruptly cutting short his tenure, Mr. Chautala said, “It is upto him, if he wants to speak on the issue. It is not my place to comment,” Mr. Chautala said.

The Vice Presidential Election is due for September 9th. The NDA has fielded Governor of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu BJP leader CP Radhakrishnan and the opposition has fielded former Supreme Court judge Justice B. Sudershan Reddy
