Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Tuesday congratulated CP Radhakrishnan after he was declared the winner of the Vice President election, saying that the position would certainly attain greater veneration and glory under his leadership.
In his first public statement following the resignation, Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed confidence in CP Radhakrishnan’s stewardship, saying that his election to the august office reflects the trust and confidence by the representatives of the country.
“Heartfelt felicitations on your election as the Vice-President of Bharat, the world’s largest democracy and home to one-sixth of humanity. Your elevation to this august office reflects the trust and confidence by the representatives of our nation," the statement reads.
He said that his vast experience in public life would bring honor and glory to this esteemed office.
“Given your vast experience in public life, under your stewardship, the august office would certainly attain greater veneration and glory," he said.
Jagdeep Dhankhar further wished CP Radhakrishnan a successful tenure, saying, “On this momentous occasion, my best wishes for your successful tenure and for the service of our great nation."
CP Radhakrishnan Becomes India’s Next VP
NDA nominee C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday won the Vice President election, defeating the opposition’s B Sudershan Reddy by a big margin of 152 votes.
As many as 452 lawmakers voted for Radhakrishnan in the election held on Tuesday.
767 MPs cast votes in the election, of which 15 were declared invalid. 788 members of the electoral college for the vice presidential election, since seven seats (6 seats in the Rajya Sabha and one in the Lok Sabha) are vacant.
The NDA had the support of 427 MPs on paper, and YSRCP’s 11 lawmakers also voted for Radhakrishnan. But the NDA nominee got 14 more votes than their tally, leading to speculation of cross-voting by MPs from the opposition camp.
Jagdeep Dhankhar’s Resignation
The election was necessitated after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on July 21, the first day of the Parliament Monsoon Session, citing health reasons. Since his resignation, Dhankhar has kept out of the public eye.
Dhankhar, now 74, is entitled to Rs 42,000 pension per month, in addition to facilities such as medical care and travel allowance, officials said. The pension from the State Assembly payable to him will be in addition to the pension he will draw as the former Vice-President and an ex-MP.
He is the third vice-president in the country’s history who resigned before completing the term. VV Giri and R. Venkataraman left the post mid-term as they had to contest presidential elections. In his resignation letter, Dhankhar said he has to prioritise health care.
