Formula One could reintroduce loud V8 engines powered by fully sustainable fuel as early as 2029, according to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Next season marks the start of a new engine era, but last February, the head of the governing body hinted at the possibility of returning to naturally-aspirated V8s or V10s in the future.
V8 engines were last utilised in 2013 before the current 1.6-litre V6 units were introduced.
“The current engine is extremely complicated and expensive," Ben Sulayem told reporters at the British Grand Prix.
“R&D costs are reaching 200 million dollars, and the engines cost approximately 1.8 to 2.1 million each. So if we opt for a straightforward V8, let’s see.
“Many manufacturers produce V8s for their cars, so commercially, it makes sense. The target is more than 50% in everything."
Ben Sulayem also emphasised that V8 engines would have significant weight advantages and their sound would be appreciated by both nostalgic fans and the new generation.
“The V8 is happening for us. With the teams now, I’m very optimistic and happy about it. FOM is supportive, and the teams recognise it is the right way," he said.
“We need to act soon… it takes three years, so hopefully by 2029 we will see something, but fuel is also very expensive, and we need to be cautious about that. Transmissions are costly too."
Ben Sulayem also mentioned the potential of a Chinese team filling the final 12th slot, which he has previously discussed, stating his belief that the sport needs more cars rather than more races.
“The time will come when we feel it is right to open an expression of interest for the 12th slot," he said.
“We are not here to upset other teams. It won’t be done just for the sake of doing it. The team must add value to sustaining the business of Formula One."
General Motors’ Cadillac brand is set to become the 11th team next season, a slot won despite initial resistance from the other teams and Liberty Media-owned Formula One.
