A day before Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held his explosive press conference on alleged “Pakistani links" of MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, the state Congress issued directives outlining instructions on its social media.

According to the directive, the Assam Congress advised Muslim members of its social media page to create “at least four accounts with Hindu names" to comment on any news or post regarding Gaurav Gogoi or the party.

“It is expected that you are aware that Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has concocted a scheme against our president Gaurav Gogoi and plans to reveal the SIT report to the media. Therefore, all members should be active from 8 am on February 8. You should write ‘Gaurav Gogoi Zindabad’ in every news link circulated in the group related to Gaurav Gogoi. Additionally, most comments should be posted from accounts created with Ahom names (the title should be from the Ahom community). Periodically visit the CM’s page and comment on his (CM’s) numerous assets. Muslim members of our social media page should create at least four accounts with Hindu names. They should use all these accounts when commenting on any news or post regarding Gaurav Gogoi or Congress," the directive stated.

Both the state units of the BJP and Congress launched digital campaigns on social media. The Congress initiated the “WhoIsHBS.com" website, a campaign site accusing Sarma and his family of corruption and land grab of approximately 12,000 bighas. It went live during a press conference but was reportedly hacked within an hour. The homepage was defaced with messages like ‘Better luck next time, Paijaan’ and ‘HBS 2.0 Loading’ (mocking the chief minister).

The Congress claimed it was a cyber attack, while the BJP mocked the party’s “poor digital preparedness" and credibility, turning it into a viral trolling moment. Earlier, too, another social media stunt by the Congress failed to make an impact.

On January 14, the Assam Congress posted an AI-generated image of the state BJP headquarters on fire, accompanied by a ‘Bhogali Bihu’ wish: “Let it consume the evils…divisive forces."

The party quickly deleted it after receiving backlash. The BJP called it “cultural vandalism", “political depravity," and an insult to Assamese traditions (Meji fire symbolising renewal).

The BJP’s official handle shared screenshots, stating “You’re EXPOSED" and asserting that deletion does not erase the intent. This sparked widespread criticism of the Congress, accusing it of disrespecting culture.

“This is the age of apps, not websites. Congress doesn’t understand that no one is interested in their website," Sarma said.

The Assam BJP has also used AI-generated videos depicting politically sensitive scenarios by highlighting the Congress’s “propaganda factory", fake news, or the shutting down of comments/blocks on their handles to avoid criticism. The Congress, however, counters these with allegations of land grab, ISI links, and personal attacks on the chief minister.
