With the Uttara Kannada district receiving incessant rainfall leading to increased inflow to the reservoirs in the district, four crest gates of the Kadra Dam were opened on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, in the wake of red alert being sounded for the district by the India Meteorological Department, Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya has declared a holiday for anganwadis and primary schools in the taluks of Sirsi, Siddapur, Yallapur and Joida on Friday.
Earlier in the day, the district administration sounded an alert about the likelihood of water being released from the reservoir, asking the residents of villages downstream to move to safer places, and prohibiting movement of boats and fishing in the river.
The maximum reservoir level of Kadra dam is 34.50 metres and the water level crossed 30 metres on Thursday morning with an inflow of 23,182 cusecs. Subsequently in the evening, four crest gates were opened to release 12,000 cusecs. The discharge from the power generation unit is 21,000 cusecs, the authorities said.
Following heavy downpour, four houses have been damaged in the district. In the last 24 hours, Karwar taluk received 154.4 mm of rainfall, followed by Siddapur (112.1 mm), Ankola (103.4 mm), Sirsi (101.2mm), Supa (88.8mm), Kumta (82.7 mm), Bhatkal (67.8 mm), Honnavar (50.8 mm), Yallapur (42.5 mm), Dandeli (36.2 mm), Haliyal (26.5 mm) and Mundgod (16.3 mm).
Landslip
Following landslip at the Kadra-Kodasalli Balemani village, the district administration has banned vehicular movement on the Kadra-Kodasalli KPS Road till further orders.
