Kolkata: Four men were arrested on Saturday for allegedly taunting and making vulgar comments at several woman doctors and forcing them to see obscene videos on the NRS Medical College and Hospital campus on the nights of June 23 and June 27.Police said the four, all residents of Convent Road in Entally, were charged with bailable offences and subsequently granted bail. They have been identified as Pappu Das, Pappu Ram, Bhola Das and Kishan Kumar. The NRS authorities have urged police to step up night patrolling on the campus, particularly around the four women’s hostels.“The two incidents crossed all limits,” said a senior NRS official. “After being informed about the harassment, we decided to lodge an FIR.
The superintendent of the hostel (where the harassed doctors stay) lodged the FIR on Saturday morning. There were complaints of woman doctors being subjected to catcalls and their hostels pelted with stones from outside the campus. In this case, however, the harassers entered the campus.
”The official said, “On June 27, the police were informed as soon as we heard about the incident. They intervened promptly and arrested the culprits.
We have requested police to step up night patrolling. The phone number of the police outpost on the NRS campus has been prominently displayed at all women’s hostels on the campus.”NRS principal Indira Dey said, “An FIR has been lodged and police have taken action. Any such complaint will be reported to the police immediately for necessary legal action. This will not be tolerated.”An NRS official said the harassers are residents of a slum near the medical college.
“We have three gates. The one near the morgue is supposed to be shut by the evening. But it is through this entrance that unwanted elements enter the hospital. We are trying our best to address students’ safety concerns,” the official said.Another official said the RG Kar incident served as an eye-opener, prompting the authorities to review the security of female doctors and take corrective steps. “As it is a public hospital, there will be constant entry of outsiders.
But we are in talks with cops on how to increase security.”According to the FIR, both incidents took place late at night next to the hostel for female MBBS students. The FIR said the harassers gathered outside the hostel and repeatedly made offensive gestures at the junior doctors. The accused held up their mobile phones, with the screens facing the doctors, and played obscene videos. The complaint stated the actions were aimed at assaulting the modesty of the doctors and creating an atmosphere of fear on the campus.Following the complaint, Entally police station set up an investigation team. Based on CCTV footage and inputs from their contacts in the locality, police tracked down the four accused.
