Premier League giants Manchester United continued their winning run under caretaker Michael Carrick as the Red Devils registered a 2-0 win over Tottenham at Old Trafford on Saturday to consolidate their position in the top four of the English top-flight.
Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes found the back of the net for United, after Spurs went a man down as Christian Romero was given the marching orders around the half-hour mark.
Mbeumo put the ball past Spurs custodian Guglielmo Vicario in deft fashion as he deposited it into the net on the back of a clever bit of set-piece routine from a United corner, as Carrick and Co. made the man advantage count.
United took the goal advantage into the break and looked to have good value for the lead they held against Thomas Frank’s men, as United displayed flashes of brilliance in an overall sound demonstration of their prowess.
Fernandes, who has been United’s saviour since pulling on the fabled red kit six years ago, produced his 200th goal involvement with his 105th goal for the Red Devils in the 81st minute of the game as he caressed the ball into the back of the net to put the result beyond doubt.
The triumph was United’s fourth win on the bounce, adding to Carrick’s scalp against arch-rivals Manchester City, PL Champions-elect Arsenal, and Fulham, since the former midfielder took charge at his beloved club after the departure of former coach Ruben Amorim on the back of unflattering results and inconsistent displays.
Tyler Fletcher, son of United icon Darren Fletcher, and twin brother of Jack Fletcher, who made his debut for the Mancunian club earlier in the campaign against Aston Villa, came on in the final knocking of the game to mark a special occasion for the family and the club faithful.
The win takes United’s season tally to 44 points from 25 outings with 12 wins, 8 draws and 5 defeats in the ongoing campaign, while Tottenham languish in 14th with 29 points in the current season.
