The ripple effects of FIFA’s extraordinary decision to spare Folarin Balogun from suspension are already being felt, with France filing an appeal to have Michael Olise’s yellow card erased ahead of the World Cup quarter-finals.

Olise was cautioned during France’s Round of 16 victory over Paraguay following a confrontation with Matias Galarza. While the Paraguayan midfielder went down clutching his face, television replays suggested the Bayern Munich attacker had only grabbed his shirt, prompting the French Football Federation (FFF) to seek a review.

The booking carries significant consequences. Another caution in Thursday’s quarter-final against Morocco would rule Olise out of a potential semi-final, where France could meet either Spain or Portugal.

Until this week, overturning disciplinary sanctions once a match had concluded was widely viewed as unrealistic. That perception changed dramatically after FIFA invoked Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code to suspend Balogun’s automatic one-match ban, making the United States striker eligible for the knockout clash against Belgium despite his straight red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The reversal came after a conversation between US President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino — which both parties have confirmed — prompting accusations of political influence and drawing sharp reactions across football.

Although French officials are reportedly insisting their submission is unrelated to the Balogun affair, the timing is notable. FIFA’s willingness to revisit one disciplinary decision has emboldened federations to contest others, raising fresh questions about where the governing body will draw the line.

FIFA has not yet responded publicly to France’s appeal. Belgium has formally challenged Balogun’s eligibility, while UEFA accused FIFA of setting a dangerous precedent by crossing ‘a red line’. England manager Thomas Tuchel also questioned the consistency of the process, joking that Harry Kane might now have to ask Trump to intervene over Jarell Quansah’s dismissal.
